Foods To Regulate Thyroid Function

The consumption of soy should be avoided as it could inhibit the absorption of levothyroxine.

Foods used to regulate thyroid function

Thyroid problems are very common, especially in women. The thyroid function  is responsible for the production of hormones – such as thyroxine (T4) or triiodothyronine (T3) – which regulate the metabolism and influence the functions of other organs.

In the case of a thyroid disorder, e.g. overactive (the thyroid function produces more hormones than necessary) or underactive (fewer hormones are produced than necessary),  adequate nutrition is  very important in order not to endanger the quality of life.

In this post, you will learn more about foods that help regulate thyroid function.

Thyroid function: foods used to regulate hyperthyroidism

hyperthyroidism

In hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), the thyroid gland is overstimulated and consequently it produces more hormones than normal. You should always consult your doctor.

If there is an excess of hormones, catabolism occurs, which leads to a loss of weight and muscle. In this case, a high-energy and balanced diet is recommended.

milk and milkproducts

  • Milk and yoghurt should not be missing.
  • Fruit shakes and purees with yoghurt, condensed milk and powdered milk or with cereals are recommended.
  • Always consume shakes with milk and yoghurt.
  • Always prepare salads, soups, pasta and egg dishes with a little cheese.

Products containing protein: egg, meat and fish

  • Add boiled egg to salads, pasta dishes, soups, and vegetables. Small portions of meat or fish are also suitable.
  • Purees, soups, creams, sauces or milkshakes can then be refined with beaten egg.
  • Meat and vegetable rolls and stuffed omelets are also very tasty.

Fatty acids or oil

  • Use heavy cream, sour cream, butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, etc. in the cooking.

nuts

  • The consumption of nuts should be increased, for example in salads, shakes or other dishes. Nuts also taste great as a snack.

Honey, bread and cookies

  • Honey (in moderation) should not be missing in shakes, juices, milk and desserts.
  • Bread and biscuits (wholegrain products are best) are recommended for breakfast or in the afternoon.
  • Croutons for soups or purees are also a good idea.

Thyroid function: foods used to regulate hypothyroidism

atrophied thyroid

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. This causes symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss, drowsiness and being overweight or obese.

In this case, you should consult an endocrinologist for the appropriate treatment and diet to be prescribed.

The diet should be strict, balanced and include all nutritional groups: raw and cooked vegetables, fruits, protein, grains, fatty acids, etc.

High fiber but low fat products

  • Lean meat such as poultry, veal or rabbit, fish and eggs. Keep the portions small, 3-4 servings per week will be sufficient.
  • Replace sugar with stevia and honey.
  • Eat more  vegetables and fruits, especially when they are raw.
  • Keep grains and starches (bread, potatoes, rice, legumes, pasta, etc.) in moderation.
  • Use mostly olive oil, but don’t overdo it.
  • Drink more water, teas, and natural fruit juices.
  •  Use lemon and spices for the preparation of dishes.

Additional advice

  • In the case of hypothyroidism, preparation forms such as fat-free frying, oven baking, boiling, microwave or steaming are recommended. It is better to avoid fried foods, gratinated foods, stews, breaded foods and canned oil.
  • Don’t forget to get  enough exercise!  Walking, running, climbing stairs, cycling or weight training … there are many options.
  • 4-5 meals are appropriate and snacks should be avoided.
  • Do not skip main meals!
