Should you sleep with socks on?

It can be assumed that around 50% of all people  sleep with socks.

There are those who need something to protect their feet at all times of the year. Others, on the other hand, are not prepared to compromise on comfort even in summer.

So should you sleep with socks on ? In this article we will introduce you to the advantages and disadvantages.

How do you sleep?

Sleep with socks

You could say there are as many ways to sleep as there are people on earth. Some opt for thick, cozy pajamas, while others resort to thick blankets.

Still others turn to the heating to avoid having to cover themselves so warmly. Finally, there are those who prefer a fan or air conditioning in the summer rather than a thinner blanket.

It’s similar with socks – it’s mostly a matter of taste.

Nobody intends to turn your habits upside down or tell you what you are doing is good or bad. It’s just about educating yourself and providing an answer to the question of whether or not you should sleep with socks on.

Sleeping with socks: advantages and disadvantages

Experts assume that you sweat your feet with socks at night. This is one of the reasons why they advise against wearing socks at night.

It is true that they keep us warm and are very cozy. However, they also have some less pleasant side effects, such as:

  • they favor infections (athlete’s foot, fungi, dandruff)
  • they can disrupt blood circulation (if they are too tight, especially around the ankles)
  • a lack of freshness can lead to fatigue
  • Foot odor can develop because the feet do not get enough air

The good news is that it is recommended that you put on fresh socks before bed to avoid these problems. That means: never wear the same socks that you wore during the day.

Not only because they’re dirty, but also because sweat and bacteria have built up in them and stain the bed linen. It is also necessary to use types of socks that are neither too tight nor interrupt blood flow.

If possible, you should wear those made of cotton, or even better those that you wear on long flights, for example.

If you wear socks at night, your body temperature will stay constant. This can prevent you from waking up or being unable to fall asleep.

The long-forgotten socks

Socks in bed are cozy

Socks generally don’t get a lot of attention in everyday life.

You hide them in your shoes or trousers, you shouldn’t notice them and it’s also very embarrassing to still wear them in more intimate moments with your partner or during the doctor’s office hours.

Not to mention if they peek out below and reveal a taste faux pas because they don’t match the rest of the clothes!

Even so, fashion companies are paying more and more attention to socks, offering them in different designs and for different uses.

A study by the Spanish Society of Neurology found that people who sleep with socks on may sleep better and deeper.

Such a small and simple piece of clothing can provide hours of refreshing rest and prevent insomnia.

There can be many reasons for poor sleep: metabolic changes in old age, traveling, high temperatures, being away from home or having irregular meals.

There are many traditional home remedies for peaceful slumber, ranging from drinking tea to hot baths to light dinners and counting sheep. For many people, however, sleeping with socks is also part of it.

It’s all a question of temperature

If you’re one of those people who stubbornly resist wearing socks while sleeping, you may soon change your mind. Many studies suggest that socks help us sleep better.

Good sleep is not only good for the memory, it also has a revitalizing and skin-beautifying effect.

The most important aspect is that the body temperature remains balanced during the night.

The body temperature drops towards tomorrow. So it may well be that you only need one blanket when you go to bed and suddenly another one in the middle of the night.

Therefore, pay attention to what clothes you wear to sleep. Socks or booties to keep your feet warm can be of great help if you have cold feet.

When the feet are warm, the veins dilate and the warmth can spread throughout the body. The brain realizes that all is well and gets ready to rest.

If, on the other hand, the feet are cold, the brain has to work harder to regulate the temperature. As a result, we are not really relaxed and have difficulty falling asleep.
